Coming Full Circle: Discussing BTE at NAF

No Comments 28 June 2011Jessica Clark

Last February, Tracy and I launched the book at the New America Foundation; this month, I spoke there again on a chapter of the book which was excerpted in the recent anthology, Will The Last Reporter Please Turn Out the Lights, edited by Robert W. McChesney and Victor Pickard. Watch the discussion here.

This week’s Beyond the Echo buzz

No Comments 21 February 2010Jessica Clark

Conversation about the book continues to build as we recover from our Chicago party and gear up for the next bash in New York on Thursday:

  • Our old digs—In These Times—excerpted the book’s “Beyond Pale, Male and Stale” chapter.
  • Over at RH Reality Check, feminist blogger Amanda Marcotte interviewed Tracy about the importance of the netroots for the weekly “Reality Cast” podcast
  • Leonard Doyle of UNFree Media considers the international implications of the media models we describe. “Beyond the Echo Chamber has the potential to change the US national conversation about progressive media and the future of journalism and it has lessons too for the world outside,” he writes. “Britain’s newspapers are so loud and opinionated that they [leave] little room for bloggers to stand out. But by sneering at participatory media, these outlets risk being left behind by emerging players. The same is true around the world where online media is still relatively in its infancy and progressive journalists, bloggers, producers, activists, readers, and policymakers are only now emerging.”
  • On MediaShift, I suggest how our model of the four network layers might help media makers understand how to better evaluate the impact of their work.

We wrote the book to spark conversations about media strategy and evaluation, so it’s exciting to see people taking up our ideas and grappling with them. Stay tuned for more feedback!

The conversation begins! Coverage from our launch week

No Comments 12 February 2010Jessica Clark

It’s been a bit of a crazy first week out, what with blizzards, postponements and lurking laryngitis. But our DC network turned out, and we’ve been making a splash online as well. Here are this week’s highlights if you missed them:

  • We kicked off our launch week on Sunday with a lively book salon on Firedoglake. “Beyond the Echo Chamber is infused with [a] proactive spirit and sense of potential, grounded in a subtle understanding of networked politics,” wrote our host, Matthew Kerbel. (Thanks–we couldn’t have put it better ourselves.)
  • On Tuesday, The American Prospect published our op-ed, “Where Will We Get the Next Rachel Maddow?” in which we highlight three strategies that progressive media outlets can adopt to succeed.
  • Despite the snow, we also managed to pull off an online panel at the New America Foundation, Making Media Work–the webcast is available here. Thanks to all of our colleagues around the country who weighed in with challenging questions via Twitter
  • C.W. Anderson also posted a thoughtful piece at the Nieman Journalism Lab, “Institutions, networks, and policy directions for a healthy journalism.”
  • The discussion at yesterday’s book party was also quite engaging–we’ll post a video shortly.
  • Today, the Free Press featured an interview with me on the book in their weekly Media Minutes podcast

We’re learning a lot from our interlocutors as we talk about the book–watch this space for new insights from the field.

Launch day! Where to find BTE: The American Prospect, New America Foundation, Nieman Journalism Lab

No Comments 09 February 2010Tracy Van Slyke

So today is the official launch day for Beyond The Echo Chamber! We’ve been waiting and planning for this day for so long, we can scarcely believe it’s actually here! To celebrate and to get the conversation going about the book, check out a couple of exciting things happening today…

The American Prospect published our op-ed, “Where Will We Get the Next Rachel Maddow? As the subhead notes, “The folding of Air America seems a grim omen for progressive media. It’s not all dire — three strategies for keeping progressive media makers flourishing.”

We were supposed to have a kick-ass in-person event at New America Foundation today called, “Making Media Work: Collaboration, Community Building and the Future of Journalism” today, but due to the snowpocalypse, we’re doing a kick-ass webcast of the event instead. So tune in here at 12:15 EST. Check back here for a slide

Last, but not least, C.W. Anderson has written a great piece for Nieman Journalism Lab, “Institutions, networks, and policy directions for a healthy journalism” about our research and analysis from BTE. Thanks C.W.!

Stay tuned for more in the coming days!
